Accelerated Technology's First Release of Nucleus SNMPv3 Addresses Security Issues in Network Management

Embedded Systems Conference San Francisco 2003

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 2003--Accelerated Technology(R), the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq:MENT), today announced the initial availability of Nucleus(TM) Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) version 3. Nucleus SNMPv3 is an embedded implementation of the SNMP version 3 protocol.

First standardized in 1988, SNMP has become the de facto standard for the management of TCP/IP based network equipment. Because SNMP was easy to implement, easy to install, easy to use, and didn't burden the network, it was quickly adapted by virtually all network equipment vendors.

However, one major problem existed with the first version of SNMP (SNMPv1). It didn't provide for security. The second version offered improvements to the original specification but didn't solve the security problems. SNMPv3, approved as a standard in 2002, was developed with security issues in mind. Specifically, SNMPv3 includes three important services that address network security: authentication, privacy and access control.

Nucleus SNMPv3, which includes engines for all three versions of the SNMP protocol, is designed to plug seamlessly into Accelerated Technology's small, robust TCP/IP protocol stack, Nucleus NET. Designed with the requirements of the embedded environment in mind, the product can be scaled to include only the desired engines and features. So, for example, if compatibility with old network equipment is not necessary, the SNMPv1 and SNMPv2 engines can be excluded from the build.

"Due to the added security features in SNMPv3, network equipment vendors will now have the confidence to fully utilize SNMP for active management in their designs rather than just having a monitoring role. Nucleus SNMPv3 offers this with Nucleus in a royalty-free package, and hence offers a very attractive solution to network developers," said Robert Day, director of marketing for the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics(R).
